Phillies urged to move on from Alec Bohm in favor of $40 million All-Star

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the top teams in baseball, and they've spent a lot of money to get there. Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Kyle Schwarber, and many others are huge parts of the team, all of whom are on big deals.

But if the Phillies want to further improve their roster, they could turn to free agency this winter and add an interesting option or two either in the infield or in the outfield. But one of the more intriguing potential solutions is targeting an Alec Bohm replacement.

Zach Pressnell of Sports Illustrated highlighted one potential free agent the Phillies could add to replace Bohm in the offseason, and while it'd be an expensive one (likely over $40 million per year), it's a fun option for the Phillies to consider.

The Phillies are urged to replace Alec Bohm with a $40 million All-Star third baseman

The superstar that Pressnell links to the Phillies is Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman. He's likely to opt out of his three-year, $120 million deal, as he seeks more money on a longer-term deal.

"Alec Bohm is a question mark in the lineup most of the time," Pressnell writes, "which opens a hole for Bregman in the City of Brotherly Love."

While a potential Bregman deal could make re-signing Schwarber or JT Realmuto tricky, if the Phillies were to lose either before Bregman makes his decision, he could be a fantastic pivot option for the Phillies.

Bregman is 31 years old and in his 10th MLB season. In 2025, despite missing a lot of time in the middle of the year, has 111 hits, 27 doubles, 17 home runs, 59 RBIs, and a .273 batting average with an .821 OPS.

He also provides solid defense at third base, and is a veteran who's won two World Series with the Houston Astros, including one against the Phillies in 2022 when he hit .294 with a .948 OPS in the postseason.

There are a lot of reasons for the Phillies to add Bregman and replace Bohm. If the Phillies don't care about money, then Bregman is a significant upgrade over the long-time Phillies third baseman.

This season, Bohm is hitting .272 with a .703 OPS. He doesn't hit for power, and doesn't walk often either. His defense isn't the best (though it's significantly improved over the years), and, most importantly, 2026 is his final season in Philadelphia.

He becomes a free agent after the 2026 season, and with the Phillies already considering a Bohm trade this past offseason, moving on from him the following winter isn't far-fetched.

But, if for some reason the Phillies decide to keep Bohm, then they could shift some things around with Bohm moving to first base for 2026, Bregman taking over at third, and Harper heading to right field.

Of course, such a scenario isn't likely, but it's still within the realm of possibility for the Phillies. Adding Bregman is an appealing option this offseason, but with the priority of bringing back Schwarber, Bregman likely won't be the Phillies' top choice this offseason.

However, if the Phillies did decide to bring in Bregman, it'd be a big upgrade over Bohm and would help round out an incredible infield, while making Bohm's potential departure a lot easier to manage.
