Budding Chelsea star Maika Hamano has committed her future to the club, signing a new four-year contract through 2029 today. The 21-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire after next season.
Hamano joined Chelsea as a teenager in January of 2023 from her native Japan, and spent that first year out on loan at Hammarby in Sweden. But she’s steadily grown in importance an impact at Chelsea since, and made a career-high 30 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring six goals.
Head coach Sonia Bompastor gave her the start in our season opener against Manchester City last weekend, and Hamano rewarded that trust with what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Given the amount of talent in this team, including new arrivals Ellie Carpenter and Alyssa Thompson, Hamano will have to keep working hard to earn her minutes. That’s the challenge posed to the young forward by Bompastor with this new contract.
“Maika is a young player who has a lot of talent – as you could see from her performance against Man City. She’s really good out of possession, she runs a lot on the pitch, and she has really started doing what we want her to do in terms of the defensive aspects. She is also working hard in possession of the ball.
“She has room for improvement, such as making sure she always makes the right decision on the pitch. If she does that, she’s going to score goals – and she did against City – but she will also give some good assists to her team-mates. So this is what she’s working on because I know she can improve that aspect of her game.
“She’s a really important player for us. She’s able to start in the big games, as you saw against City last weekend, which is a good thing. There’s a lot of competition in the squad, but as a manager, the most important thing for me when I pick my starting 11 is that I care about the performances. When she’s performing, she’s one of the first ones I’ll select in the starting XI.”

Expectations set. Time to meet them.
Congrats, Maika; let’s keep winning all the things!
