NBA Team's 'Sparse' Draft Party Crowd Grabs Attention

The Atlanta Hawks were in a perfect position to make some noise in the NBA Draft, and that's what they did. Two days ago, they had the No. 13 and No. 22 picks, and as much as it sounded good that they could select two talented prospects, there was always a chance that they would make a trade. Well, on Tuesday, they traded for Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team deal, and gave the No. 22 pick to the Brooklyn Nets

The Hawks were not done there, and during draft night, they traded the No. 13 pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for the No. 23 pick and a first-round pick for next season.

Asa Newell stands with NBA commissioner Adam Silver after being selected as the 23rd pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft at Barclays Center.

With the No. 23 pick, the Hawks selected Asa Newell from Georgia. It was a great night for the team as they got the guy they wanted, but at the Hawks' draft party, not many people stayed until the last moment to see who they picked.

Though it may not have been the most encouraging turnout, the fans who were still at the draft party were excited for the pick, and they have every reason to be. Newell is an uber-athletic forward who has potential on both sides of the ball.

On offense, he stays around the rim and can catch lobs, and if he can get out in transition if he needs to. On defense, he's a great rim protector and can also be a good help defender. He has the tools to be a quality 4 or 5 in the league, and he will fit in good with the Hawks.
