The Washington Mystics are ready for the 2025 WNBA season. On Wednesday, the team announced the final 12 players who made it to their roster. The Washington franchise trimmed its roster and waived Zaay Green, Khadijiah Cave, Ashten Prechtel and Lauren Jensen before the start of the regular season.
The team's 23rd pick of the 2025 draft, Lucy Olsen, made the final cut. It's not an easy task to secure a spot in the league, especially for a player selected in the second round. However, Olsen proved something to the Mystics, which convinced them to start the regular season with her.
Olsen played two preseason games for the Mystics and had difficulty finding her stroke. The former Iowa guard shot 2-for-14 from the field throughout the two exhibition games.
Washington's head coach, Sydney Johnson, spoke to the media on Wednesday and talked about how Olsen secured a spot on the team.
"Honestly, it's still really early in her career. I mean, she hasn't played a first official game. So there's still a lot of growth for her to undertake, and so at this point, we're just encouraged to see how she can do it," Johnson said via Joshua Valdez on X.
Olsen was a standout player in college. During her first three years, she played for Villanova and was a big-time scorer. The point guard averaged the most points during her junior season, where she put up 23.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals.
After three years at Villanova, the 5-foot-9 guard transferred to Iowa for her senior year. She averaged 17.9 points and 5.1 assists on 36% shooting from beyond the arc during her lone year playing for the Hawkeyes.
Olsen is the fourth player from Iowa who's active in the league. She joins Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin and Megan Gustafson.
