Mizzou Soccer (4-4-1, 1-1 SEC) played its highest-ranked opponent of the season thus far as No. 5 Tennessee (7-1-1, 1-1 SEC) was welcomed to Audrey J. Walton Stadium on Thursday evening. The Tigers played it close for a little over 40 minutes of play, but once the Lady Volunteers got on the board, they seized control of the match.
Tennessee had five shot attempts in the final three minutes of the first half. The final shot of the half, from junior forward Kate Runyon, broke the scoreless tie and found the bottom right of the goal in the 44th minute. Junior goalkeeper Kate Phillips saved two shots before the goal, but the defense could not clear the ball away from danger.
Runyon found the back of the net for a second time in the 56th minute. Tennessee’s offense caught Mizzou off guard with Phillips outside the penalty box, giving Runyon the open goal off the setup from senior defender Ally Brown.
30 minutes into the match, senior midfielder Keegan Good went down on the pitch with what appeared to be a non-contact injury. She was helped to the sideline by two members of Mizzou’s staff, not putting any weight on her right leg. Due to the storms, postgame interviews were canceled and the press box was cleared out, leaving media unable to talk with Missouri head coach Stefanie Golan to get an update.
At the half, the Lady Volunteers held a 1-0 lead, and the last-minute goal loomed largely. The Tigers recorded three shot attempts, one on goal, to Tennessee’s nine shot attempts, six on goal.
With neither of Tennessee’s leading goal scorers participating in this match due to injuries, the stat sheet was not stuffed by either side to finish the match. The Lady Vols limited Mizzou to only five shot attempts (three on goal) and one corner kick opportunity on the night while Tennessee recorded 12 shots, nine on goal.
The outcome of this match increased the Tigers’ losing streak against Tennessee to six. The two programs have played every year since Mizzou joined the SEC in 2012.
The Tigers will hit the road for the first time since Aug. 31 to face another tough conference opponent in Kentucky. Kickoff will be at noon on Sunday, Sept. 21.
