Michigan Wolverines football needs one thing from freshman phenom QB Bryce Underwood

Bryce Underwood comes to Ann Arbor with all the hype in the world.

But in the season ahead, the Michigan Wolverines won't actually be asking for too much from their top-ranked quarterback.

ESPN's Bill Connelly writes that Michigan needs one thing from Underwood: "General competence."

"Michigan ranked 130th in yards per dropback in 2024," Connelly writes. "Granted, going 8-5 and beating both Ohio State and Alabama while almost getting actively sabotaged by the quarterback position is an accomplishment in itself, but the 2023 national champions should probably get back to trying to win games the normal way. Either highly touted freshman Bryce Underwood or Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene must provide general competence unseen last fall."

Michigan fans surely want Underwood to win the job. But if he's not up to speed for college football, Keene is a good stopgap option.

Either way, the Wolverines could just use some stability at QB. If they can throw the ball even at an average rate, they can contend for the Big Ten title.

Underwood may be a lot better than average, too, but in the early going, if he can at least give Michigan that, it'll be a win.
