Mexico's private retailer Grupo Coppel has disclosed the appointment of Diego Coppel Sullivan as its new CEO as part of restructuring its senior management structure to strengthen its execution capacity.
The move is part of the company's strategy to boost its governance model and ensure long-term growth.
Grupo Coppel, headquartered in Culiacan, Sinaloa, caters to Mexico's lower-income segment with a network of small department stores situated alongside banks nationwide.
Coppel will oversee the group's comprehensive operations, which include Coppel Stores, BanCoppel and Afore Coppel.
His responsibilities will encompass establishing and executing strategy, coordinating the executive team, and ensuring adherence to the organisation's purpose, vision and strategic objectives.
Diego’s tenure at Grupo Coppel began in 2010. He has been instrumental in several operational and commercial sectors, such as store operations, distribution centres and product categories.
He has also held the position of commercial director, overseeing the furniture, digital and marketing divisions.
Diego Coppel stated: “We are consolidating a physical and digital ecosystem that better responds to our customers' needs in a competitive environment that demands speed and focus. I am responsible for supporting this transformation from a new role, but with the same commitment as always: working closely with the team and focused on the customer.”
Diego Coppel steps into the CEO role with immediate effect in mid July 2025, taking over from his uncle, Agustín Coppel Luken, who has served as both CEO and chairman since 2008.
Luken will retain his position as chairman of the board of directors, concentrating on strategic vision, accountability and the maintenance of robust corporate governance practices.
Agustín Coppel stated: “This decision seeks to strengthen our execution capacity at a key moment in Coppel's evolution. We will continue to build an agile, profitable company with a relevant value proposition for our customers, supported by a consistent and competitive omnichannel experience, as well as a solid governance model focused on results.”
