Maurizio Sarri Has Decided Which Lazio Defender He Wants Gone

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri has reportedly decided to exclude Samuel Gigot from his plans for next season.

The club’s officials have already highlighted the need to trim the squad from 30 to 20 players amidst the absence of European commitments.

Lazio Looking to Offload a Centre-Back

Therefore, Lazio are expected to offload a few players from each department, and this will likely include a centre-back. After all, Sarri finds himself with five defenders vying for two starting berths.

The experienced tactician is keen to maintain the services of Alessio Romagnoli and Mario Gila, whom he has identified as the cornerstones of the backline. In addition to the Italian and the Spaniard, two back-ups are required at the back.

According to Il Corriere della Sera (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Sarri prefers the experienced Patric and the young Oliver Provestgaard for these two roles, which leaves Gigot out of the equation. The Frenchman has only recently completed a permanent transfer from Olympique Marseille after spending the previous campaign on loan at Formello.

Why Sarri Doesn’t Want Gigot

While the 31-year-old wasn’t a regular starter under Marco Baroni, he was deemed a reliable option at the back. But as the newspaper explains, Sarri considers Gigot’s attributes ill-suited to his playing style. Hence, unless the defender manages to win over the manager in pre-season, Lazio will be looking to find him a new club before the end of the summer.
