The Seattle Mariners are having one of their best seasons in over two decades. Coming into the year, it was clear they had a strong ballclub — but they’ve been more than just competitive; they’ve been one of the most exciting teams to watch in all of baseball. On Wednesday night, they accomplished something that hadn’t been done in Seattle in 24 years.
“T-Mobile Park has been the site of 2,092 regular-season home games for the Mariners since it first opened its gates on July 15, 1999, yet the ticketed 42,883 Wednesday night will always be a special part of a starved fanbase that will forever remember being here,” MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer wrote. “To witness the title that their favorite team finally claimed after 24 long years, and the spectacle with which it was delivered.”
This season has been truly special in Seattle — and perhaps no one embodies that more than Cal Raleigh, who is having a historic year and is poised to win AL MVP. Just last week, he etched his name into the record books twice in a single night.
“The first home run from Raleigh Tuesday came in the third inning and was his 55th of the season. It's a significant number because Raleigh passed Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle and set a new record for the most home runs ever in a season by a switch-hitter. Raleigh later hit his 56th of the season, tying Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. for the Mariners' franchise record,” CBS Sports’ Matt Snyder wrote.
Then, on Wednesday night, after the Mariners clinched, Raleigh gave fans a bold and unfiltered expectation for the playoffs:
“Might as well win the whole f*cking thing,” Raleigh said on the air.
