Manchester United are keen on signing Fiorentina central defender Pietro Comuzzo, as per reports.
Leny Yoro’s injury setback just days before the Europa League final has left Ruben Amorim with very limited options at the back for the season-defining game in Bilbao.
The United head coach has had to deal with injury crisis at the back ever since his arrival in November. Apart from Yoro, there are question marks over the availability of Matthijs de Ligt and Ayden Heaven as well.
Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, has been sidelined since February and is unlikely to return to full fitness before the end of the year. Further, United have also decided against extending contracts of Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof, who will both depart at the end of the season as free agents.
To avoid a similar situation in the next campaign, United are expected to be on the hunt for new defenders this summer.
According to Football Insider, United are following Comuzzo, who has been a revelation for Fiorentina.
Having made 42 appearances across all competitions for La Viola, the Italian has caught the eye with his tactical intelligence and calmness in possession. He has been dubbed as “the next big defender”.
It is claimed that the 20-year-old will not come cheap if United decide to make a move for him, with the Serie A outfit all set to demand a fee in the region of £20 million for his services.
The Italy U20 international recently signed a new deal at the club until 2028.
It is said that he is on United’s list “for the future” as such the Red Devils might think twice before spending £20m on him this summer.
United may have to wait until next summer to get their hands on the Fiorentina prodigy but with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Newcastle United also reported to be in the mix, the Mancunians could miss out on him altogether.
Meanwhile, Comuzzo’s exploits at Fiorentina has also helped David de Gea keep a lot of clean sheets in Serie A, leading to AC Milan monitoring the former United No. 1 ahead of the summer.
