What many thought would be a business as usual kickoff to the Maine high school football season turned into plenty of surprises in the opening three weeks of play. Kennebunk has already upended last year’s Class B champion Falmouth in a 14-10 battle. Thornton Academy remains the top team in the state even after loss to New Hampshire’s No. 4 ranked Bedford.
From perennial contenders to up-and-coming challengers, who else should be in the mix out of the Pine Tree State?
The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.
Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 22.
1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans
The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (2-1) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. That included Thornton Academy’s 35-14 loss in the Maine high school football Class A state championship game, which the Trojans are on a mission to avenge this fall. The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough, but dropped their first game in a 26-14 loss to Bedford (New Hampshire). Thornton Academy aims to bounce back this week when they take on South Portland (1-2).
2. Portland Bulldogs
The Bulldogs (3-0) finished the 2024-25 season with a five-game winning streak, including their victory over Thornton Academy for the Maine high school football Class A state championship, their first title since 2002. Portland began their title defense against Oxford Hills Comprehensive, edging them 21-7 last week. The Bulldogs needed every big play to muster a 28-21 victory over Windham the following week, but things got easier in last Friday’s 34-0 romp of Deering. Portland features on offense arguably the top player in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones, who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively last fall and has transitioned more to the quarterback position for the Bulldogs.
3. Bonny Eagle Scots
There’s no more questions on this one: Bonny Eagle (3-0) is so back after finishing below .500 last fall. That was backed up in last week’s 43-0 win over Windham. In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and they’re off to a good start in attempting to snap the streak. Next up, Bonny Eagle will take on an undefeated Noble group. Buckle up as it’s a battle between two 3-0 clubs.
4. Noble Knights
Beating a solid Windham club, 10-6, in Week 1 will boost your stock and put you in the Top 5 of the rankings if you’re the Noble Knights. Noble (3-0) once again handled business in Week 3 when they narrowly defeated Massabesic, 17-14, just before a highly anticipated matchup against No. 3 Bonny Eagle this upcoming Friday night.
5. Oxford Hills Comprehensive Vikings
The newbie into this week’s set of Top 5 of the rankings are the Oxford Hills Comprehensive Vikings after dominating Edward Little in a 43-0 rout. Week before that, the Vikings throughly dispatched Messabesic in a 36-0 win, having this team out-scored its last two opponents 79-0. an Oct. 3 matchup against No. 3 Bonny Eagle looms large.
