Maine High School Football Top 25 Rankings – Sep. 17

What many thought would be a business as usual kickoff to the Maine high school football season turned into plenty of surprises in Week 1. Kennebunk upended last year’s Class B champion Falmouth in a 14-10 battle. Thornton Academy remains the top team in the state after a blowout victory last Friday.

From perennial contenders to up-and-coming challengers, who else should be in the mix?

The Massey Ratings, officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

Here is the latest Maine high school football Top 25 rankings, according to Massey as of Sep. 17.

1. Thornton Academy Golden Trojans

The Thornton Academy Golden Trojans (2-0) finished with a 10-3 record last season, with two of their three losses were against the Portland Bulldogs. That included Thornton Academy’s 35-14 loss in the Maine high school football Class A state championship game, which the Trojans are on a mission to avenge this fall. The Trojans kicked off the season with a dominating 44-0 victory over Scarborough last week and continued their winning ways against Bangor in a 42-7 rout. Up next for Maine’s top team is a road test against Bedford.

2. Portland Bulldogs

The Bulldogs (2-0) finished the 2024-25 season with a five-game winning streak, including their victory over Thornton Academy for the Maine high school football Class A state championship, their first title since 2002. Portland began their title defense against Oxford Hills Comprehensive, edging them 21-7 last week. The Bulldogs needed every big play to muster a 28-21 victory over Windham last week. Portland features on offense arguably the top player in the state in Maine commit Cordell Jones, who accounted for 1,216 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns offensively in 2024.

3. Bonny Eagle Scots

Could stock be back up on Bonny Eagle (2-0) after their 48-6 Week 1 thrashing of South Portland? That sediment was backed up in last week’s 26-6 win over Sanford. In 2024, the Scots had more wins than losses, with their campaign ending in a defeat to Noble in the Maine high school football Class A state quarterfinals. It’s been a half dozen years since Bonny Eagle last won a state title and they’re off to a good start in attempting to snap the streak. Next up, Bonny Eagle will go on the road to face a fiesty Windham bunch.

4. Kennebunk Rams

Boasting a 9-1 record after the 2024 regular season play, the Kennebunk Rams looked like a good bet heading into last season’s Maine high school football Class B state championship game to win it all. The Rams were not able to seal the deal in a 26-13 loss to Falmouth. Kennebunk (2-0) was able to exact a little bit of revenge in the opening week of the season when they defeated Falmouth at home in a 14-10 victory. The Rams followed up the win over the Navigators with a 28-0 shutout victory over Scarborough and now return home to face Cheverus (2-0).

5. Noble Knights

Beating a solid Windham club, 10-6, in Week 1 will boost your stock and put you in the Top 5 of the rankings if you’re the Noble Knights. Noble (2-0) handled businees in Week 2 when they defeated South Portland, 23-14. The Knights hit the road this week against Massabesic before a highly anticipated matchup against No. 3 Bonny Eagle on Sep. 26.
