Real Madrid Eye Liverpool’s Konaté After Saliba Setback
Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring Ibrahima Konaté’s contract situation as they weigh up defensive reinforcements for the future. According to ESPN, William Saliba’s new deal at Arsenal has forced Los Blancos to look elsewhere, with Konaté emerging as a potential target.
Saliba off the market
ESPN confirmed that “another Madrid target, William Saliba, has agreed a new five-year contract at Arsenal, with his current deal due to expire in 2027.” The French defender had been at the top of Madrid’s wishlist for 2026, but his commitment to the Gunners represents a significant blow to their long-term plans.
Konaté on the radar
With Saliba unavailable, sources told ESPN that “there is some internal debate within the club over a move for Konaté, 26.” The Liverpool centre-back is out of contract next summer, making him a tempting option under Madrid’s strategy of securing world-class players on free transfers. The likes of Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kylian Mbappé have all followed that route in recent years.

Still, as ESPN noted, “there is not the same degree of unanimity inside the club over Konaté as there was in the case of Alexander-Arnold.” While some officials admire his physicality and ability to slot into a back three, others question his injury record and consistency.
Other names in contention
Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig remains on Madrid’s shortlist, while academy graduate Joan Martinez could eventually provide an internal solution. ESPN also highlighted that departures for Alaba or Rüdiger in 2026 could open further defensive gaps.
For now, the Konaté situation will be closely watched, particularly with Madrid considering their long-term defensive balance under Xabi Alonso.

From a Liverpool perspective, this report is intriguing but not entirely surprising. Real Madrid have a long history of circling Anfield for talent, and Konaté’s contract situation only adds fuel to the speculation.
For many Liverpool fans, there would be two immediate concerns. First, the defensive stability Konaté brings when fit is crucial. His pace and strength provide balance alongside Virgil van Dijk, especially when facing top Premier League attacks. Losing him would weaken a backline already in transition.
Second, the recurring issue of injuries has left some supporters divided. While Konaté’s ceiling is undeniably high, questions remain over his availability across a demanding season.
Ultimately, the key will be whether Liverpool can agree fresh terms with Konaté in the months ahead. For the Anfield faithful, keeping him fit and tied down to a new deal could prove as important as any incoming signing.
