Liverpool will finally hand a Premier League debut to a star after over a year. It’s been a long, long wait.

Liverpool face Chelsea on Saturday evening as they try to recapture some form. The Reds have lost back-to-back games this week and are in need of a win.

But things won't be simple. Alisson Becker is out of the fixture and will miss at least the rest of the month.

The Brazilian picked up an injury against Galatasaray from a fairly innocuous moment. He came out to stop an attack and claim the ball but must have landed awkwardly - off he went and now we won't see Alisson until November.

It's a significant blow, of course. Alisson has been brilliant this season, much as he has been since joining Liverpool.

His injury forces a change of plans at the back at a moment when Liverpool would rather keep things as solid as possible. But we will get a long-awaited debut out of it.

Giorgi Mamardashvili to debut

Liverpool signed Giorgi Mamardashvili well over a year ago now, having paid £25m to Valencia for the goalkeeper. The Reds were happy to leave him out on loan there for the entirety of last season, though.

Now Mamardashvili is with the Liverpool squad and has been waiting for his chance. There was a first start for the Reds against Southampton in the Carabao Cup, while he came off the bench for a UEFA Champions League debut on Tuesday.

Saturday, though, is by far the biggest test for Mamardashvili as he finally steps onto the pitch in a Premier League game. Liverpool are desperate for three points and up against a team that also needs to reverse a period of poor form.

It won't be simple, in other words, but we will get our first taste of what Mamardashvili can bring as a starting goalkeeper in a major game. This next month, in fact, will showcase a player who is planning to be Liverpool's no.1 beyond Alisson.

Mamardashvili is the successor, after all. But only on paper - he'll need to prove himself on the pitch to hold down that role permanently.

Saturday is the first real step towards doing that.
