Lexington Senior (N.C.) picked up a 40-0 win over East Davidson on Friday night to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Yellowjackets were paced by senior Kamari McDonald, who managed to account for nearly half of his teams points on the defensive side of the ball.
McDonald nabbed three interceptions in the win and managed to return all three for touchdowns. That broke the North Carolina High School Athletic Association record for pick-sixes in a game.
As first noted by High School OT’s Joel Bryant, McDonald surpassed 13 players who had recorded two pick-sixes in one game, per the NCHSAA record book. The senior also plays wide receiver for Lexington and is also a star on the basketball court. McDonald is currently uncommitted.
With McDonald’s help, Lexington finally had an outburst in the end zone this season. It combined for 41 total points in its first three games of the year, failing to score more than 14 points in each. The defense has been elite, however, having now pitched three shutouts.
The Yellowjackets opened the season with a 13-0 win over West Davidson, then lost 17-14 at North Davidson — a game that saw McDonald nab another INT and catch five passes for 63 yards, per MaxPreps. They responded with a 14-0 win over Thomasville before the win this Friday.
With six games to go in the regular season, Lexington is looking to surpass last season’s 7-4 record. The Yellowjackets lost in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A tournament. That was a major improvement for the program though, as its last winning season before then came in 2017. From 2019-2022, Lexington won just three games, twice going winless. It won five games in 2023 before last season’s improvement to seven victories.
Lexington returns home next week and will host Randleman (3-1) on Sept. 26. The Massey Ratings predict a 24-20 win for the visitors.
