The status of Celtics guard Jrue Holiday remains up in the air heading into the Celtics’ second round series against the New York Knicks. The 34-year-old sat out the final three games of Boston’s first round series win over the Orlando Magic with a right hamstring strain. Boston returned to practice on Friday after two days off following Game 5, but Joe Mazzulla did not reveal much in his update about the veteran guard.

“Yeah, day to day,” Mazzulla said. “He’s getting better every day. Doing everything he can to make sure he puts himself in position to try and come back as fast as he can. He’s working hard.”

Holiday played 36 minutes in the Celtics’ Game 2 victory over Orlando back on April 23 but popped up on the injury report as questionable ahead of Game 3. He was a scratch shortly before the tip and was later ruled out well ahead of Game 4 and 5.

The Celtics open up against the Knicks on Monday night in Boston, so he will have 12 full days of rest before getting an opportunity to see the floor. Boston will release the team’s injury report on Sunday for Game 1.

The Celtics will likely need to lean on Holiday a lot more in the second round than they did against a woeful Magic offense. Jalen Brunson has talked about Holiday being one of the toughest defenders he’s faced in the league this season, and Boston will be looking to slow down the Knicks’ All-Star along with a loaded supporting cast.

Holiday has also earned some accolades during his downtime, receiving the NBA Sportsmanship Award Thursday.

“He’s a great guy,” Derrick White said. “Someone that you look up to. He just does it all the right way. He doesn’t want any of the praise or recognition. He’s definitely one of the best people in this game. Obviously he’s a great player, but the person he is, is unbelievable. I’ve learned so much from him and his family. I’ve loved having him on this team.”

Holiday will be one of several Celtics players to watch from an injury standpoint when they host the Knicks in Game 1 at TD Garden Monday night.
