Jeglertz’s Denmark in controversial defeat to Germany

Andree Jeglertz’s Denmark were controversially beaten 2-1 by Germany in their second game at Euro 2025.

The Danes had taken a first-half lead but two contentious goals in 10 minutes including Lea Schuller’s winner while defender Emma Snerle was prostrate with a head injury, turned the game around.

Germany, who started with City defender Rebecca Knaak in the heart of their defence, began the game the stronger against the incoming City head coach’s side.

And they thought they were ahead in the 18th minute when Klara Buhl fired a low shot into the bottom corner, but it was ruled out by VAR as the strike passed through the legs of striker Sjoeke Nusken in an offside position.

Denmark took the lead eight minutes later when Amalie Vangsgaard pounced on a loose ball to hit a low shot past Ann-Katrin Berger at her near post.

Germany, one of the pre-tournament favourites, thought they were handed a lifeline when a cross struck Frederikke Thogersen on the arm. Again VAR intervened as the contact was outside the box.

Jeglertz’s side were organised and compact making them difficult to break down and Knaak was booked in the second half to hastily stop a Denmark counter-attack.

An equaliser finally came in the 56th minute and again the VAR was involved – recommending a penalty after Katrine Veje’s slight tangle with Linda Dallman. Nusken made no mistake from the spot.

And Schuller scored the winner 10 minutes later with yet another controversial moment.

Portuguese referee Catarina Campos allowed the game to continue after Emma Faerge smashed a clearance straight into the face of team-mate Snerle and was on the ground with a head injury.

Snerle was immediately substituted and looked in some discomfort as she left the pitch.

Denmark’s future at the tournament is now dependent on the result between Poland and Sweden later today in Group C.
