While Gervonta “Tank” Davis continues to embarrass himself inside and outside the ring, two of his former opponents are on a collision course, as Mike Coppinger reports that Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Lamont Roach Jr have “struck a deal” to meet this coming December.

Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KO) will be defending his WBC interim super lightweight title, which he got by outclassing last-second replacement Omar Salcido in July. Roach (25-1-2, 10 KO) will be stepping up to 140 for the first time after controversially drawing with Davis in March and watching a planned August rematch go up in smoke thanks to Davis’ ongoing shenanigans.

It’s a solid fight between two guys who really don’t belong at 140, but I really have to call attention to Roach’s joke of a super featherweight title reign. While Mario Barrios remains the gold standard for garbage championship runs, Roach has managed just once defense since taking the belt from Hector Garcia in November 2023, beating the undeserving and outclassed Feargal McCrory the following June. This is despite an absolute laundry list of contenders the WBA supposedly ordered him to face; hell, the top contender slot has changed hands twice since he got the call to face Carroll, who went on to lose to Albert Batyrgaziev who went on to lose to Jazza Dickens.

If you want to take bigger fights at 135 and 140, be my guest; just don’t squat on the belt.
