Insider Reveals Red Sox’s Potential Plan to Get Marcelo Mayer up to Majors

The Boston Red Sox need to get healthy, step one. Outside of that, they need to make a quick decision at first base.

With Kristian Campbell taking reps at the position, it could cause a change in the entire organization.

According to Jason Ounpraseuth of NESN, Campbell playing first base could be a big help in getting Marcelo Mayer to the major league level. He added that Mayer would slot into a second base, and Campbell would take over as a full-time first baseman.

“According to Cora, Campbell’s process has nothing to do with Rafael Devers. But it could lead to Marcelo Mayer’s ascension to the big league club.

“Mayer ideally would slot in at second base, with David Hamilton continuing his role as back middle infielder. Mayer primarily played shortstop in his minor league career. However, has experience at second base and third base, positions he also played for Boston during spring training. He played second base for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, so the organization does seem to be trying to get him used to the position,” he wrote.

Mayer is a very good athlete and has started to play second base more recently. However, he's typically been a shortstop, which means there could be some growing pains for him at the other position up the middle.

Regardless, if the Red Sox can guarantee him at-bats at the big league level and he has to play second base, Mayer won't be upset, and he'll find a way to make the change.

If this is what it has to take to get him up to the show, the Red Sox need to do it soon.
