Inside Rob Thomson’s theory on why Phillies sluggers have gone silent in NLDS

The Philadelphia Phillies have come up short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in both NLDS games, as they head to Dodger Stadium while sitting on the brink of postseason elimination. The offense hasn't been its usual self and manager Rob Thompson has a theory on why that might be.

The Phillies depend on Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper to get their offense running. However, all the trio has managed are just two hits and 11 strikeouts. If things continued this way, their postseason might come to an end earlier than many expected.

In the post-game interview of the 4-3 NLDS Game 2 loss, Thompson shared his thoughts on why the trio is not doing well at the plate.

"I think those guys are trying to do a little too much right now," Thomson said via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. "...instead of just being themselves and looking for base hits. The power will come."

Phillies' Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber don't quite agree

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber shared their thoughts on the reason behind their struggles at the plate. Harper was presented with Rob Thompson's working theory but he doesn't quite agree with it.

“No, I wouldn’t say we’re pressing," Harper said. “I just think we’re missing pitchers over the plate. They’re making good pitches when they need to."

Schwarber took accountability for his own struggles but he doesn't agree with his skipper's thoughts.

“I can speak for myself, I know that I haven’t," Schwarber said. "You want to get something going. You want to get anything going. And for me, I just didn’t come through in that situation."

The Phillies duo can think what they want but right now their bats are cold, the Dodgers are pressing, and their dream to win their first World Series with Philadelphia might soon be over if they don't get over their struggles.
