How Florian Wirtz Could Elevate Liverpool's Game Even Further

In a whopping $156 million deal, Florian Wirtz has been signed to Liverpool until at least 2030, travelling over from Bayer Leverkusen to start in the coming season. This tops Liverpool’s previous club-record signing of Virgil van Dijk for $100 million, which happened back in 2018. According to Wirtz, he’s a player who wants to ‘win everything every year’, so is he going to do that with the Reds? What do the football odds platforms have to say about that?

Liverpool’s Winning Ways

Over the last few years, Liverpool have been one of the most impressive sides in the Premiership, with Jurgen Klopp leading them to multiple trophies, including a Premier League title in 2020 and a Champions League title in 2019. Klopp’s impact is still being felt now too, with the team recently winning the Premier League once again under new manager, Arne Slot.

No matter what the tournament is, the football odds are nearly always in their favour, with fans of the club – and even non-fans – now expecting them to win, even if they’re not necessarily in their best form.

Could the Victories Continue?

The wins are expected to continue, too. Going into the 2025/26 season, Liverpool are looking more dangerous than ever, with Slot bringing a fresh tactical approach that’s being praised for its intensity and fluidity. Key players like Darwin Nunez are still delivering, and with exciting young Liverpool talent rising through the ranks, the Reds’ squad depth looks as strong as it’s ever been.

There’s always heavy competition – especially in the Champions League, where they’ll have to face juggernauts like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich – but the Reds have proven time and time again that they can go toe-to-toe with the very best, and so the odds don’t look set to change in that respect.

Could Florian Wirtz Elevate Their Game Even Further?

With all of this in mind, a lot of people are wondering exactly how Wirtz could elevate their game further. There’s no doubting his credentials, having been a standout performer for his club during their historic 2023/24 Bundesliga-winning season – where he was named Player of the Season, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 more. But with Liverpool currently on a role, there are some who believe a signing like this wasn’t exactly needed, and, on the contrary, could disrupt what Liverpool are doing, rather than add to it.

One of the reasons the Reds remain so successful is due to their team chemistry, which has been built up over the last few years. Of course, a signing was needed, but signing a superstar like Wirtz will have a huge impact on the team, compared to signing a less established player who could have had the space to integrate more gradually.

Sometimes, being a winning club isn’t just about signing the best, but signing the players who fit within the existing squad and style of play. It’s all about balance, harmony, and understanding both on and off the pitch, and we won’t really know if Wirtz can take on that role until he steps onto the field. There’s every chance he could. This might be a great signing that truly does push Liverpool to become an even more dominant force than they are now. But we’ll all just have to wait and see.
