Houston Texans Fans React to Damon Arnette Signing After Jimmie Ward Arrest

Less than a week after veteran safety Jimmie Ward was arrested on a felony assault charge, the Houston Texans appear to have added another defensive back to their roster.

According to KPRC2 reporter Aaron Wilson, the Texans are signing former Las Vegas Raiders first-round cornerback Damon Arnette to a one-year deal. The 28-year-old is expected to replace veteran corner Ronald Darby who retired earlier this month.

Arnette, who has also had his share of legal issues, hasn't played in the NFL since 2021. He most recently played for the UFL's Houston Roughnecks this spring, registering 18 tackles, one sack, and an interception returned for a touchdown

The 19th overall pick out of Ohio State in the 2020 NFL Draft, Arnette played in 13 NFL games across two seasons (2020 and 2021), recording 29 total tackles and three passes defended.

Barstool's Jon Gruden, Arnette's former head coach, is extremely proud of the changes he's made since last suiting up for an NFL game.

“He’s got a whole new identity,” Gruden told KPRC 2 in a telephone interview. “I see a guy who has reinvented himself. He has done it very impressively. I hope he continues to do that. We’ll all be able to pull for him. Some of the best stories I’ve been involved in with coaching is seeing guys turn it around from adversity."

Houston Texans fans also weighed-in on social media after the news of Arnette's signing broke.

"Hopefully he’s over the off the field stuff because he’s a solid player." one user wrote

"Good for him he definitely deserves a second chance!" another suggested

"We do love our first round corner reclamation projects," a user commented

Arnette may find playing time hard to come by, however, in Houston's loaded secondary led by Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter. He'll get a chance to prove himself next month when the Texans open training camp on July 22
