The Houston Astros lost to the Atlanta Braves 8-3 on Sunday afternoon, and the Astros have a 4-6 record in there last 10 games played. Houston trails the Seattle Mariners by one game in the American League West standings.
Seattle has an 82-68 overall record this season and have a 9-1 record in the last 10 games played. With the Mariners leading the division at the moment, the Astros are facing a critical three-game series on Monday night against the Texas Rangers. Texas has a 79-71 record and are just two games back of Houston for the final wild card spot in the American League.
Houston Astros Face Must Win-Series Situation Against the Texas Rangers
Texas has a 7-3 record in their last 10 games played. With the Rangers playing better than the Astros as of late, Texas has the momentum heading into this series against Houston. The Rangers have to potentially sweep this series to overtake Houston in the standings. The Astros have to win at least two-out-of-three in this series.
After the Rangers series, Houston will face Seattle in a three-game series starting on Friday. Houston has made the playoffs every year since the 2017 season. When they missed the playoffs in 2016, they finished in third place in the American League West with an 84-78 record. The Astros finishing in third place in the American League West isn't out of the question with the way they have been playing as of late.
On Monday, the projected pitching matchup will be Jack Leiter (9-8 record, 3.81 ERA, 130 strikeouts) for the Rangers and Jason Alexander (4-1 record, 4.19 ERA, 55 strikeouts) for the Astros. The first game of this series will go a long way in deciding what can potentially happen over the next few days. A win for Texas on Monday night is going to put some doubt into the mind of the Astros. If the Astros win the first game on Monday night, the Rangers would then be three games back and Texas would have a big hill to climb.
