Hollensteiner wins twice, Flathead boys, Glacier girls lead Western AA

BUTTE — It was a fast boys 300-meter hurdles at the Western AA Divisional Friday, and Flathead’s William Hollensteiner was the fastest.

The junior led a 1-2-3 Kalispell finish with a personal-record time of 38.51 seconds at Bulldog Memorial Stadium. Teammate Lane Chivers was second at 39.04; Glacier standout Ethan Anderson was next at 39.74.

Hollensteiner won twice Friday, claiming the long jump with a near-meet record leap of 22 feet, 5.5 inches. It was also a PR and led a 1-2 Flathead finish with Ben Bliven (21-2.75).

Bliven ran the second-fastest 100 trials time Friday and then clocked 22.07 in the 200 prelims — while Hollensteiner came across in 22.11. The Braves also lead the meet through nine boys events with 71 points. Helena (49) and Helena Capital (48) were next, followed by Missoula Big Sky (33) and Glacier (32).

After eight girls events Glacier had 61 points. The Wolfpack got one individual victory, from sophomore Allie Krueger in the shot put (35-9), and a ton of depth points.

Capital was second at 42, with Helena (38) third and Flathead (30) fourth.

Back to the boys: Flathead’s lone blemish was a bad handoff that led to a disqualification in the 400-meter relay, though the Braves had already qualified a team for next week’s State AA meet at Legends Stadium.

Flathead also had big points from, among others, sophomore Christopher Holland, who won the 3,200 meters with a PR of 10:11.78. He led a 1-3-4 Braves finish in the event with freshman Carson Thorne and sophomore Brodyn DeShaw.

Senior Kasen Kastner was second to Helena junior Dylan Hill in the 800. Hill clocked 1:53.75, the only meet record of the day. Helena’s Henry Ballinger ran 1:54.23 two years ago. Kastner finished in 1:54.39 in another fast race: Glacier’s Owen Thiel was right behind with a PR of 1:54.73.

Michael Mahar cleared 13 feet to take third in the pole vault on criteria, and Eli Coopman similarly claimed a sixth-place point in the high jump.

On top of Anderson and Thiel, the Wolfpack boys got a win from Ben Winters in the shot put: He threw 52-1, while teammate Will Astle PR’d and finished third at 50-5. The Pack also saw Ethan Kastelitz take fifth in the javelin with a career-best throw of 163-4.

Glacier’s girls found points almost everywhere: Alyssa Vollertsen, second in the 800 with a PR of 2:18.8; Carmen Eddy and Addison Brisendine finishing 3-4 in the 300 hurdles; Charlotte Osler taking third in the javelin; Zeila Wagner taking fourth in the long jump and Breanna Barnes hitting a PR of 11-3 to finish second (on criteria) in the pole vault.

Barnes, Eddy, Emmery Schmidt and Wagner led Glacier’s 400-meter relay to victory as well, in 50.09.

The Flathead Bravettes will make noise. Senior Alivia Rinehart ran the fastest times in both the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles trials, then ran a career-best 44.54 seconds to win the 300 hurdles.

In the 3,200, senior Josie Wilson and freshman teammate Everett Holland supplied a first-and-third finish. Wilson won in 11;34.57; Holland finished in 12:17.75, her second PR of the day along with her fourth-place 800 time of 2:22.72.

The meet concludes Saturday. Flathead swept last year’s team titles.
