Gillette Roughriders win Phil Brown over Elmwood Giants 3-0

JAMESTOWN — The Gillette Roughriders (Wyoming) came out on the right side of a pitcher’s duel in a 3-0 win over the Elmwood Giants (Canada) in the championship game of the Phil Brown Classic on Sunday, July 6, at Jack Brown Stadium.

“It means a lot, it means a lot for these players,” Roughriders head coach Nate Perleberg said. “Today I just got thinking, this is the last time that Riley Schilling is here and Cason Loftus and Jarrett Black and … Karver Partlow so these seniors, these super seniors, Grayson Sargent, these guys that have gotten so used to this tournament and this program, this is our last ride right here. So it means a lot. It’s our third tournament win of the year and hopefully it’s setting up for the big one at the end of the year.”

The Riders’ Karver Partlow pitched a complete game two-hitter while striking out nine hitters and not walking anybody. The Giants’ (17-7) Theo Wiebe went 3.0, giving up zero earned runs on two hits while walking two hitters. He was relieved by Karsten Pomaranski who went 3.0 giving up two earned runs on four hits while striking out three and not walking anybody. Partlow said his three best pitches today were his fastball, changeup and slider.

“He had a really good slider today, that’s a pitch that he’s just kind of started throwing this year honestly, he’s been more of a curveball guy,” Perleberg said. “He did throw some curveballs but a lot of sliders today and then his fastball, was able to pitch off of that. So he pitched a little more backwards maybe than usual but they were really struggling with that pitch and he was able to command it in the strike zone which is really big at this age.”

The Roughriders (40-22) opened the scoring in the second inning when Case Schilling hit a single to right to score a run and make it 1-0. The Riders were able to push their lead out further in the fight when Seth Petersen hit a single to score a run and make it 2-0 before he was brought home later in the frame by Partlow to push the lead out to 3-0.

The Riders lead could’ve been four runs when Ethan Hecker hit a bloop single to center but a throw from the Giants’ Cal Grieve home was ahead of the runner to end the inning.

“It’s a big boost always,” Giants head coach Dennis Sworyk said. “We do have a really good outfield and we do practice a lot. I know you usually go grass, dirt, grass, you’re scoring all the time but our outfielders have a lot of strong arms and … for young kids they play the positions very well. It’s always a huge boost when you get something like that in a game. I feel it helped us a bit.”

On the mound, the Riders’ Partlow came four outs away from a no-hitter before a slow dribbler down the third baseline just got under the third basemen’s glove and allowed Grieve to reach. The future Jimmies baseball player responded to giving up the hit by retiring four of the next five hitters he faced. Partlow said he really started to lock into the fact that he had a no-no going in the fourth or fifth inning.

“I said a couple bad words to myself, looked in my glove for a second and then dialed it back in,” Partlow said.

Despite the loss, Sworyk was not sad about his team coming up just short.

“Proud of them,” Sworyk said. “It was a good weekend. We had a lot of fun and that’s kind of the important thing, coming out and experiencing a different city and being together as a team is huge, just proud of the boys.”
