German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is to visit London in a bid to forge closer cooperation with the United Kingdom on foreign and security policy.
"I am seeking close alignment, not only within the European Union but also with the United Kingdom, because this country is of central strategic importance for Europe's security," Merz told the German parliament on Wednesday.
The chancellor said he has accepted an invitation to travel to London for talks.
Discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are also expected to include a partnership agreement.
Merz expressed his happiness at the UK government's efforts to align with the European Union on foreign and security policy despite Brexit.
"I make no secret of the fact that I still deeply regret that the United Kingdom left the European Union," he added.
