Former Twins first-round pick Dan Serafini found guilty of murdering father-in-law

Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Dan Serafini was found guilty of murder and attempted murder after killing his father-in-law and attempting to kill his mother-in-law in 2021.

Serafini was deemed guilty by a jury in Placer County, California after a two-month long trial.

Serafini, 51, was accused of waiting inside the home of his father-in-law Gary Spohr and mother-in-law Wendy Wood before ambushing and shooting them. Spohr was killed in the attack. Wood survived the attack, but died by suicide years later.

Police conducted a two-year investigation into the shooting before arresting Serafini and a possible accomplice in 2023.

The trial ended July 8, a little less than two months after opening statements. The jury deliberated for three days before reaching a verdict. Serefini was found guilty of murder, attempted murder and burglary first degree. He remained in custody with no bail, and will be sentenced Aug. 18. He could receive life in prison, per KCRA.com.

Serafini spent seven seasons in the majors after being drafted No. 26 overall by the Twins in the 1992 MLB Draft. He reached the majors in 1996 and spent time with the Twins, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres.

Serafini last pitched in the majors in 2007. He retired with a 6.04 ERA over 263 2/3 innings.
