Former Manchester United man stood by Vitesse when other clubs came calling

Loved for his loyalty, Alexander Büttner is now a household name among Vitesse supporters. He is believed to have rejected numerous clubs this summer despite the uncertainty surrounding the Arnhem club’s license.
Büttner reportedly had more than 10 concrete offers in the transfer window, where he could earn a good living. However, his heart stuck with Arnhem. “There were some great clubs among them,” says the 36-year-old left-back.
“But I said no to all of them. My heart is here, and I couldn’t leave Vitesse like that. I chose uncertainty, but I did choose my club. I would rather have retired than leave Vitesse. Club love, that’s what they call it, you know.”
It’s a choice that doesn’t often occur in the money-driven world of football: “But I owe a lot to Vitesse,” Büttner replies. “I was able to make my professional debut here; the club has always been good to me. My transfer to Manchester United was also partly thanks to Vitesse. I won’t forget that. I’ve been away a few times, but I’ve always come back. It didn’t feel right to leave now.”
