Former Celtics No. 6 overall pick Marcus Smart has been linked to buyout rumors with the Washington Wizards this summer, and he could head to the Western Conference if a buyout materializes.
Smart has been on the move over the past three seasons, playing for three teams during that span. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award with Boston in the 2021-22 campaign and spent one more year there before being traded to Memphis. However, injuries limited his impact with the Grizzlies, and he was eventually dealt to the Wizards last season.
Smart is on an expiring $21.6 million contract, and a buyout remains a realistic option for the 31-year-old, as he has reportedly received little interest on the trade market.

According to Jovan Buha of the Buha’s Block podcast, Smart could be a potential candidate to join the Los Angeles Lakers if he hits the open market this offseason, but Buha expressed some concerns over bringing in the veteran guard.
“I think his defense has slipped a little bit the last couple years, and I just don’t think he’s been the same player since he’s left the Celtics,” Buha said.
However, Smart could revitalize his career with the Lakers following a lackluster 2024-25 campaign. He’d likely fill a meaningful role off the bench, competing for playing time with Gabe Vincent and Jordan Goodwin.
While Smart isn’t expected to impact a team like he once did with Boston, he’ll still garner interest from playoff-caliber teams should he become a free agent.
