Florida Loses Recruit to Big Ten Powerhouse on Friday

The Florida Gators received bad news to start what should be a crazy day of recruiting, courtesy of the 4th of July. Three-star defensive lineman Jamir Perez has flipped his commitment from the Gators to the Big Ten powerhouse and National Champions, the Ohio State Buckeyesaccording to Rivals.

Perez is ranked the No. 61 defensive lineman and the No. 25 player in Ohio according to the On3 Industry Rankings. The 6-foot-4, 330-pound big man committed to Billy Napier's team in May 2025, two days after an official visit. Since then, he has had numerous OVs, which included one to Columbus in June.

Speaking to Rivals, Perez discussed being an in-state recruit and the coaches who could develop him.

"Just being an Ohio kid and from the city,” Perez said. “Having Coach Johnson in my corner with (new defensive coordinator) Coach (Matt) Patricia, I will have that true development and best chance of doing what I want to achieve."

Perez did confirm that the OV to Columbus was a significant factor in his decision to flip and stay at home.

“It was a great experience,” Perez said. “It was great being with the other recruits, and just being with Coach Johnson and Coach Day overall was a great experience.”

Despite the setback, Florida and Napier have had a strong month of June in terms of recruiting. They jumped from outside the top 25 to No. 14, with July also starting well, as four-star players Kendall Guervil and CJ Hester are now Gators. All is good down in Gainesville.
