Erdoğan says there has been progress in Eurofighter sale to Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Monday that there has been progress in the negotiations regarding the sale of the Eurofighter combat aircraft to Turkey.

Germany and Turkey have a positive stance on the matter, state news agency Anadolu cited Erdoğan as saying. "I am convinced that we will receive our jets very soon," he said on a return flight from Cyprus.

Turkey wants 40 Eurofighter combat jets. Since Germany is involved in the European joint project, the combat jets cannot be exported without the approval of the German government.

During his visit to the United Kingdom last Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said there had not yet been a final decision, but they were "on the way to a good decision that also enables a corresponding export approval."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said they wanted to coordinate joint export campaigns.
