Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The Edmonton Oilers signed Connor McDavid to a two-year, $25 million contract extension, the team announced Monday.

The All-Star center, who joined the Oilers as the top pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, signed an eight-year, $100 million contract in 2017. He was to hit free agency next off-season.

"Connor's commitment to our team and our city is surpassed only by his singular focus of bringing a Stanley Cup back to fans of the Edmonton Oilers," Oilers general manager Stan Bowman said in a news release.

McDavid, a five-time scoring champion and three-time MVP, totaled 26 goals and 74 assists for 100 points over 67 appearances last season. He logged 32 goals and a league-high 100 assists for 132 points in 2023-24.

McDavid led the NHL in goals (64), assists (89) and points (153) over 82 appearances in 2022-23 en route to his most recent Hart Trophy, the award given to the league's MVP.

The forward led the NHL in points in five of his 10 seasons. He totaled 361 goals and 721 assists for 1,082 points over the first 712 appearances.

McDavid also led the NHL in postseason points for three last of the last four years. He totaled eight goals and 34 assists for 42 points during the 2023-24 postseason en route to the Conn Smythe Trophy, the award given to the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs MVP.

The Oilers, who lost to the Florida Panthers each of the last two years in the Stanley Cup Final, will host the Calgary Flames in their regular-season opener at 10 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Edmonton.
