Donald Trump on Sunday admitted he’d prefer if the NFL’s Washington Commanders reverted to their previous name, the “Redskins,” a term widely condemned as an insulting and racial slur against Native Americans.
“Well, you want me to make a controversial statement?” Trump said when asked if the team’s name should be changed back.
He continued: “I would. I wouldn’t have changed the name. It just doesn’t have the same, it doesn’t have the same ring to me.”
“But you know, winning can make everything sound good,” Trump added. “So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good. But I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
Trump’s comments align with his past remarks on the issue.
During his 2016 presidential campaign, as calls to change the name grew louder from Native American groups, Trump claimed: “I know Indians that are extremely proud of that name. They think it’s a positive.”
And in April this year, he claimed he had spoken “to people of Indian heritage and they love that name and they love that team,” calling it “a much superior name to what they have right now.”
He added: “It had heritage behind it, it had something special.”
The Washington NFL franchise used the name “Redskins” from 1937.
Despite previous owner Daniel Snyder once vowing in 2013 that the name would “NEVER” be changed, exactly that happened in 2020 after years of protests and pressure from sponsors. The team temporarily rebranded as the Washington Football Team before becoming the Commanders in 2022.
