Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders has never been afraid to share what life looks like for him after multiple surgeries and serious health setbacks. Speaking on the Colorado Coaches Show, Sanders gave an unfiltered look at how he prepares for game day while also delivering one of the more memorable sideline stories of the young season.
“I got to make sure I pee before I go [coach],” he told co-host Mark Johnson. “Being straight up..I’m honest, you know I am…sometimes before the game I use a catheter so I could make sure my bladder is empty so I don’t have to [go]. Because when you feel it, you got to use the bathroom. You start leaking…I’m sorry, but I’m getting explicit, but you start leaking and you got to take care of it.”

Sanders said that speaking openly about this “new normal” has led to countless conversations with fans who share that their families are facing the same issues. “It is amazing that everywhere I go, someone comes up to me and tell me about a family member or friend that has the exact same thing, and thank you for being vocal about it.”
On the Colorado sideline sits a port-a-potty sponsored by Depend, which Sanders admitted he has not used. But it quickly became the source of a lighter moment involving former Buffs wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. “I got a port-a-potty…Jimmy Horn asked me to use it the first week. I say no deuces. You can use it. And I say, Jimmy, do not go in there and sit down and then the thing [gets] a gust of wind blows and everybody catches you sitting down. Not good. We just bust out laughing. That was in the middle of the game.”
The laughter was real, but the lesson was serious. For Sanders, the story served as both humor and metaphor. In football and in life, you never want to get caught with your pants down.
