American Tara Davis-Woodhall lived to her top billing to win the women's long jump world title while Jimmy Gressier of France became only the third man from Europe to win 10,000m gold.

Olympic champion and season leader Davis-Woodhall soared 7.13 metres to get the gold ahead of German Malaika Mihambo like at the Paris 2024 Games.

Mihambo, who got the gold in 2019 and 2022 as well as at the 2021 Olympics, took silver with 6.99m and Colombia's Natalia Linares claimed the bronze with 6.92m.

Mihambo got Germany's first medal in Tokyo after the team had finished without silverware in 2023.

Gressier meanwhile came from behind on the home stretch of a tactical race for a stunning 10,000m gold in 28 minutes 55.77 seconds. Ethiopa's Yomif Kejelcha, who had kicked in the final turn, had to settle for silver, and Sweden's Andreas Almgren took bronze.

The only other European men to win the longest track event were Italy's Alberto Cova in 1983 and Briton Mo Farah in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
