Cowboys-Packers reach new NFL overtime rules on Sunday Night Football

Sunday Night Football gets to experience something new.

The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers have reached overtime in Week 4, just the second game of the season to get to OT.

It's time for these fanbases to experience this season's new rules. Dallas actually won the first overtime game of the season over the New York Giants.

NFL OT rules for Cowboys-Packers

The NFL overtime rules changed for 2025.

Now, both teams get an opportunity to possess the ball no matter what.

Even if the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, the second team gets the ball.

The only way a first possession can end the OT game is if there's a defensive touchdown or safety.

Overtime remains a 10-minute period, and if it's tied after 10 minutes, it goes into the books as a tie.

After each team gets the ball once, if it's first tied, it is sudden death. Next team to score wins.

With good kickers on each side, if the first team doesn't get a touchdown or even any points, it could quickly turn into a kick for the win.

But it's cool that both teams get a chance to see the ball and try to score a TD first. It could make for some great theater on Sunday night.
