The Washington Commanders' offense could look a lot different after it's been revealed that starting quarterback Jayden Daniels underwent further testing on an injury he sustained in their 27-18 loss against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2.
It's been revealed that the 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year is dealing with a knee sprain. The injury isn't long-term, but Daniels could miss time while recovering from the setback.
If he has to miss Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Dan Quinn and the Commanders will have to turn to a different starting quarterback.
Marcus Mariota in line to start Week 3 for the Commanders if Jayden Daniels can't go
Heading into a longer-than-usual week to prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders, Washington may look towards backup quarterback Marcus Mariota to lead the offense, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Mariota, 31, is in his second season as the backup in Washington. The former No. 2 pick out of Oregon was the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans from 2015 to 2019 before moving on in free agency. Mariota's also played for the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Philadelphia Eagles.
The veteran quarterback came in the same 2024 offseason as Daniels, helping mentor the 2024 No. 2 pick as he transitioned from college to the NFL.
In the 93 games Mariota has played in his career, he has 16,184 passing yards, 97 touchdowns, 55 interceptions, and a 63% completion rate. He's also compiled 2,156 rushing yards and 18 more touchdowns while running the ball.
