The Colorado Buffaloes couldn't overcome four turnovers in a 35-21 loss to the TCU Horned Frog on Saturday night.
The Buffs jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game. They've led in all but one game this season, but found themselves on the opposite end of another result. Kaidon Salters' three first half interceptions were more self-inflicted wounds.
The Liberty transfer will have to work through his ill-advised reads and get himself back to his true playing form. Salter completed 18-of-29 passes for 217 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, with a rushing touchdown.
TCU's defensive backs were physical with the CU receivers, who couldn’t get separation to catch passes, allowing them to bat passes in the air that were intercepted. They were able to sack Salter twice in the game as well. The one turnover that put the game in the balance was the punt that bounced off the Buffs returner Kam Mikell, which TCU was able to recover and score the go ahead touchdown at 28-21 with 5:44 left.
Colorado's offensive struggles continue to show. There is no flow other than Salter getting out there and making a play. The offensive line was bullied Saturday night, proving former offensive line Coach Phil Loadholt is truly missed. There has been no intensity thus far this season. Buffs offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur tried to get the ball into their playmaker Omarion Miller's hands, who caught six passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
The Horned Frogs' offense took advantage of the two interceptions thrown by Salter in the second quarter, tying the game 14-14. Josh Hoover accounted for all five touchdowns. Eric McCallister caught four passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Colorado will have to find a way to close out games by executing and making the plays down the stretch. If they want to get themselves a conference win this season, that's what it will take.
Deion Sanders and the Buffs host Iowa State next week. TCU plays Kansas State.
