The transfer window has only just closed – but injuries are kicking in and Chelsea’s sporting structure never sleep. They’ll already be thinking about January tweaks and major summer moves.

Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace would fall into the latter category. He’s already one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, and there’s no telling what level he could be at after another season playing for Oliver Glasner.

He’s likely to be a starter (or close to it) for Thomas Tuchel’s England at the World Cup next year too. His value is going to continue rising as all this comes together.

CaughtOffside claim that Palace want £60m for him – we’d be amazed if they accepted anything under £80m in a year’s time. Chelsea may be reluctant to pay that much but they’re being put in the mix among interested teams including Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Palace showed in the Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi sagas this summer that they’re no pushovers when it comes to transfers, and we expected similar issues with Wharton. But we totally see why Chelsea and these other top teams want him – he’s a superb Premier League midfielder, with a perfect mix of physical and technical skill.

Wharton set to become household name with huge season ahead

We expect him to really become a household name this season through the course of this season, and a potential World Cup starting role should just add to that growing cachet.

Chelsea may regret not getting this deal done this year or the year before when they were linked with interest in the former Blackburn kid – he looks the real deal, and now everyone knows it.
