Cancun Issues 'Warning' to All Travelers This Summer

Millions of tourists from around the world have their eye on Mexico for the summer, and it's not hard to see why. Beautiful beaches and great scenery are all around the country, and one city in particular remains a popular spot for travelers.

As the weather heats up, the bookings are also getting hotter and more competitive. Business is booming for one of Mexico's most popular resort towns in recent weeks, but officials are giving a warning to those who have yet to book their stay.

The Cancun Sun says that between 81 and 83 percent of bookings in the city have been occupied through the summer season, and increased tourism is only expected to increase as the weather gets warmer.

A minimum of 800,000 travelers are expected in the month of July alone, and travelers are told to book as early as possible to avoid the potential for a canceled booking.

An additional consequence of the increase in demand is that resorts and hotels will be less likely to offer deals. If so many people are willing to pay the regular price, there's little incentive for establishments to offer better deals to travelers.

16.2 million passengers traveled to Mexico in the first three months of the year alone, up two percent from the 2024 numbers for the same time-frame. 28.5% more travelers made their way to the country than before the COVID pandemic began based on 2019 numbers.

"This growth… clearly demonstrates the strengthening of our country’s airport infrastructure, which in turn allows us to continue making the tourism sector a key link in bringing well-being and shared prosperity to all Mexicans who participate in this noble activity," said Mexican tourism secretary Rodríguez Zamora.

The Mexican government has also attempted to give travelers an easier time when they arrive in the country. Excessive taxi fees from airports have been hard on customers as they make their way to the nation. Some customers were charged hundreds or even thousands to get from the airport to their hotel or resort.

In response to the outrageous taxi fares for tourists, Cancun now has a bus that runs for as low as $8 as an alternative.
