Blue Jays give Century, cancer the boot Tuesday night

JAMESTOWN — Miles Anderson scored two goals on Tuesday.

It helped get the Blue Jays the win, but the night was about more than just those two goals.

Tuesday marked breast cancer awareness night at Rotary Field. The Jamestown High School soccer team honored Lindsey Quichocho, a Jamestown native who has been battling breast cancer aggressively since May.

"Every year the captains get to pick what they want to do and they were kind of hemming and hawing and didn't really know what to pick," Harty said. "I work with Mrs. Quichocho and I thought what a great way to give back. The boys were all up for it. I think this is a great idea and I am very proud of them for picking this."

Quichocho was first diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago but in May, she received the news that her cancer had returned and spread to her spine. She traveled to Mayo Clinic where she was scheduled for surgery but just a few days after her meeting with the neurosurgery team, her condition worsened and she became paralyzed from the waist down. She was rushed into May for emergency surgery.

The surgery was effective and Quichocho regained her ability to move her legs. Through the summer she regained strength and her ability to walk. Quichocho is still undergoing chemotherapy and remains under the care of the Mayo Clinic.

"I want to express thanks to the boys soccer team and the community for continuing to support our fight," Quichocho's husband Boya said. "Raising awareness is huge. I know Lindsey and my whole family are going to continue the fight for all of those affected by this disease and as they said tonight 'give cancer the boot.'"

While the fight against breast cancer is still ongoing, the Jays' fight against Century — at least for the time being — is over.

The Jays defeated the Patriots 4-1 to earn the team's first win since Aug. 19. The Jays will have nine days off before they travel to Dickinson to take on the Mavericks. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

"It was a much needed win for us tonight," Harty said. "This group of kids has struggled and losing is really hard to take, especially with how we started our season. To come away with a 4-1 win against Century, that is a big boost for us. ... we're pretty excited about this win tonight."

At the 11 minute mark, Anderson scored the Jays' first goal since Aug. 29. The senior scored his second goal of the night just 90 seconds later to give the Jays a 2-0 lead 13 minutes into the first half.

"Once we score, we tend to relax a little bit as a team," Harty said.

While Anderson was busy putting balls in the net, Evan Harty was busy keeping them out.

Harty, the first-year starter, made nine saves off 10 shots attempted by Century. Harty has served as the backup goalie for the past two seasons.

"He does work really hard," Harty said of her son and goalkeeper. "Being his coach, I am very critical because I have seen him work so hard this summer. One of our main goals is distribution and it was little scary at times this game but overall his effort and his communication are on point and that has been what has kept us in games lately."

One goal snuck by Harty with eight seconds left to play in the first half. Century's Gaege Gangness was credited with the goal.

Century had no answers for the Jays in the second half.

In the 54th minute, Damour Mutursta netted his second career goal, then in the final minute, Peace Tumukunde made good on an assist from Grady Eckart. Tumukunde is currently leading the Jays' in goals scored with six.

"It is just so happy to see them enjoy this win," Harty said. "This is how it should be because we are a better team than what we've been doing. This is just so exciting."
