Preseason hopes have faded as Orioles have not been able to sustain solid effort on offense, pitching.
Entering the 2025 MLB season, sports publications like The Athletic had some high hopes for the Baltimore Orioles. The Athletic put the Orioles at the No. 9 spot in their preseason MLB Power Rankings.
Well, that was a pretty high spot. The Orioles, coming off the past couple of seasons with postseason play, might have had hopes for a fast start. Those hopes were dashed with an awful start that just didn't turn around quickly.
In fact, Baltimore has not been good for much of the season. Brandon Hyde got his walking papers as manager, leaving interim manager Tony Mansolino to try and fix the situation. The Orioles are 30-41 this season, getting them stuck at No. 23 in the latest MLB Power Rankings from The Athletic.
Jackson Holliday has done his best to give Orioles' offense some push lately
If you'd like a quick wrap-up on what the state of the Orioles is right now, then here's Chad Jennings of The Athletic with a succinct analysis. "The Orioles have, in fact, been a mess," Jennings wrote. "They have the fourth-worst run differential in baseball, the rotation has been awful and even their lineup has been mediocre."
Jackson Holliday has done his best to provide some offense for the Orioles. Right now, Holliday, a second-year infielder, is hitting .255 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. He has an OPS of .719, with the hopes of doing even better as the summer months roll along.
Keep an eye on Gunnar Henderson, too, as he's looking to add some punch to the Baltimore bats. Cedric Mullins currently leads the Orioles in home runs with 12.
Are there some bright spots, even signs of hope for the Orioles' fanbase? Well, the Orioles’ bullpen has compiled a 1.76 ERA over the past 23 games. That, according to MLB.com, is the majors' second-lowest mark during that period.
Mansolino must be pulling some right strings at this time. Since May 30, Baltimore has won 12 of 17 games. The Orioles have had to battle back from their rough start. If they can keep winning in this way, then there's an outside chance the Orioles can work their way into an American League wild-card discussion.
