Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania was rushing to a small rural community in the southern part of the state on Wednesday following reports that several police officers had been injured in a shooting.

Details were scant, but at least two people from the scene were being treated at WellSpan York Hospital and were in serious condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman, Maggi Barton. It was not clear if they were police officers.

The school district in Spring Grove, Pa., had told its schools to shelter in place because of an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday afternoon, though it later lifted the order and said schools had not been affected.

The governor posted on X that he was heading to the scene in North Codorus Township and had been “briefed on the situation involving law enforcement.” He asked residents to heed directions from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Several public officials referred on social media to reports of officers being injured and expressed concern. The state’s lieutenant governor, Austin Davis, posted, “Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County.”

The reported site of the shooting is on a rural road about 2.5 miles outside of Spring Grove, a town of about 2,500 people halfway between York and Hanover, whose major industry is a large paper plant.
