At least 17 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza City, Palestinians say

At least 17 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a building in the Gaza Strip, the Hamas-run civil defence agency said on Wednesday.

The building in the al-Zeitoun district of Gaza City was housing families displaced by the war, the agency said, adding that seven minors were among the dead.

The information could not be independently verified. The Israeli military did not immediately comment.

In a separate Israeli airstrike, the director of the Indonesian Hospital, Marwan Sultan, and his family were killed in their home in Gaza City, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.

The Indonesian Hospital, located in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, was cleared by Israeli forces in May and has not been operational since.

According to Gaza health authorities, more than 57,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war nearly 21 months ago. The figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The war began following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas and other Islamist militant groups, in which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were taken hostage and brought into the Gaza Strip.
