At least 14 people have been killed and more than forty injured in Russian strikes on the city of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials say.
The country's interior minister, Igor Klymenko, said Russian drones and missiles targeted 27 locations in the capital overnight into Tuesday, damaging residential buildings, educational institutions and critical infrastructure.
He added that it was one of the largest attacks on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Meanwhile, Russian air defence units intercepted and destroyed 147 Ukrainian drones overnight, Moscow's defence ministry said.
The "massive" bombardment of Kyiv lasted for nine hours, according to Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko. "Waking up in utter nightmare: people trapped under rubble and full buildings collapsed," she wrote on X.
Klymenko said that rescue teams were still working to free people.
An air raid alert remained in effect more than seven hours after it had been proclaimed, the Reuters news agency reported.
"More strikes by Russian drones on residential buildings in Kyiv," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, wrote on Telegram. "Russia is continuing its war on civilians."

Other parts of the country also came under attack. At least one person was killed and 10 others were injured after the southern city of Odesa was targeted by a large-scale drone attack, Klymenko reported.
There are fears that people may still be trapped underneath the rubble, Ukraine's emergency service said on Telegram.
Ukraine and Russia have continued to launch drone attacks in recent weeks, as direct talks between the warring sides failed to secure a ceasefire or significant breakthrough.
The talks held in Turkey in May resulted in a prisoner swap
War has been waging for more than three years since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022. It currently controls around 20% of Ukrainian territory, including the Crimean peninsula it annexed in 2014 after the overthrow of Ukraine's pro-Russian president.
