Andrew Cole has backed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to fix one of the biggest problems that plagued a dreadful Premier League campaign for his former team, Manchester United.
The Brazilian attacker has joined the Red Devils from Wolves in a £62.5 million deal, the first signing as part of a squad overhaul the club hopes will improve their fortunes next season.
Cunha, who scored 15 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League last term, is set to take up one of the two no.10 positions in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 setup.
Andrew Cole: Matheus Cunha can fix glaring Man Utd problem
Cole believes that the 26-year-old can help United create more goals, an area they struggled with greatly in 2024/25. They scored just 44 goals, the fifth-worst total in the division, on their way to a 15th place finish. They were also 11th for expected goals assisted (xAG), i.e. the xG that follows a key pass.
“Hopefully he brings a lot of creativity,” Cole told Sky Sports News. “Everyone has been talking about Manchester United not creating enough chances. He’s a player who can do just that.
“I’m looking forward to it, and no doubt he’s looking forward to it as well, which is the most important thing. He can get himself a good pre-season and go from there.”
United also remain in talks to sign Mbeumo from Brentford, and Cole thinks he could also help solve the team’s issues in front of goal.
“I think he’s been fantastic for Brentford,” the ex-England striker said. “To get the goals he got last season at Brentford is a big plus.
“Manchester United scoring goals has been a bit of a problem, so if he does sign, I’m hoping he can bring more goals.”
