Amazon Prime Day deals: The best nugget ice maker we tested is down to its lowest price of 2025

Not everyone needs a fancy kitchen setup. If your AeroPress gets the job done each morning, there's no reason to invest in a massive espresso machine (though our top pick is $200 off right now — just putting it out there). But if there's one thing just about everyone craves in the summer, it's ice. And if your fridge's ice maker is slow, skimpy or nonexistent, the GE Profile Opal 2.0 might just be the upgrade you've been waiting for.

It's gone viral on social media, and Yahoo Senior Home Writer Lisa Schweitzer named it best nugget ice maker after comparing a slew of models. Even "cooler"? It's on mega sale for Amazon Prime Day. (Psst: Here are more Prime Day kitchen deals to peruse while you're at it.)

Love ice-cold drinks? This machine will be your main "freeze."

Why is it a good Prime Day deal? 💰

You're saving $170 with this markdown, which brings the sought-after countertop stunner down to its best price of 2025 (our trackers tell us it dipped just $10 lower for Black Friday). If your household goes through a lot of ice, this will save you a ton of time and headaches, which is pretty priceless.

Why do I need this? 🤔

Those of us without ice-making refrigerators usually rely on space-hogging trays that take forever to freeze and never seem to want to release our ice cubes. A countertop ice maker, on the other hand, provides ice on demand, and the GE Opal is speedy. According to Commerce Editor Saundra Latham, who put it to the test, "Ice started dropping into the bucket within about 10 minutes, as promised." It can crank out 1.6 pounds per hour and holds up to 3 pounds of ice at a time. That's a lot of really iced tea.

Many a TikToker has declared their love of this contraption's irresistibly chewy, pebble-style ice (or, "fancy, nibble-friendly" ice, as one reviewer called it). Latham describes the cold cubes as "the kind of soft, flavor-absorbing nuggets you'd get from Sonic or Chick-fil-A, no drive-through required."

Getting your freeze on is a piece of cake, she adds: "Day-to-day operation is where the Opal shines, because you really don't have to do anything. As long as the machine is plugged in, turned on and filled with water, it makes ice automatically until the bin is full. Every time you take a scoop or two, it whirs back to life to replenish your stash. I only need to top off the side tank every few days."

Sound shouldn't be much of an issue, either. "I don't find the Opal any louder than a typical built-in freezer ice maker," says Latham. "There's a low hum and the occasional soft click of nuggets falling into the ice bucket. More annoying is the loud fog horn-like noise it makes when it kicks on and off, but that only lasts a few seconds. If you're sensitive to noise, you can tell it to make ice when you're sleeping or out of the house by connecting it to Wi-Fi and setting a schedule in the GE SmartHQ app."

One thing to note? There is a decent amount of maintenance involved. "GE recommends cleaning the Opal once a week and descaling it every two to four weeks, depending on the hardness of your water," heeds Latham. That said, she says, "Most countertop appliances are luxuries, but I've never had one that feels more conspicuously luxurious than the Opal."

Can you say "eye candy?" This ice maker might be the most aesthetically pleasing appliance ever. (Amazon)

What reviewers say 💬

This ice device has also melted many an Amazon customer's heart.

Pros 👍

"Great ice machine," gushed one gleeful guzzler. "We now drink more water because the ice is so fantastic. Great for cocktails too."

"I've had this for a year now, and it's by far the best sonic ice maker on the market," raved another convert. "I previously bought a cheaper version, and after three months, I decided to take it to my office and get a new one for our kitchen. It's worth the money. The ice seems to always stay fresh."

"Coming from a person who likes absolutely nothing on the kitchen counter, this ice maker is currently taking up quite a bit of valuable real estate on our counter, and we are OK with it," shared a third. "Our house is quiet, so we hear it running, but it is not annoying. ... Is it enough to provide ice for a small gathering of 10? ... Maybe not, but we recently had seven people eating dinner, and the ice maker did the job. ... The ice from this ice maker does not clump or stick together at all when in the ice maker bin."

Cons 👎

"We love this ice maker," wrote a mostly pleased purchaser, who added, "It does take up a lot of room on the counter. A lot of reviews say it's noisy; it's no noisier than the refrigerator!"

"Quiet and quick to make ice," said a final fan. "Easy to use. The once-a-week cleaning does take time, but [it's] worth it to keep the machine running great."

Easy access to these irresistible ice nuggets for $170 off? That's like striking gold.

And to keep your new favorite toy sparkling:

This solution targets mineral and calcium buildup to de-scale the machine inside and out. This will help it run smoothly and produce better-tasting ice, and it even comes with its own scrubber.

"Every so many months you have to use this solution to clean your ice maker," explained a reviewer. "No way around it. However, the end result is when the ice tastes like when you first got the ice maker."

If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)
