Algeria - Drama at the 5-Juillet stadium: four officials placed in pre-trial detention

Four dead, several injured, and a season finale plunged into mourning. June 21, 2025, will remain etched as one of the darkest chapters in Algerian football, following the collapse of part of the stands at the 5-Juillet stadium during the MC Alger – NC Magra match. Forty days of investigation later, Algerian justice has named its first suspects in a case that aims to set an example.

Serious and unprecedented charges

The Bir Mourad Raïs prosecutor's office has confirmed charges against seven senior officials linked to the management of the Mohamed-Boudiaf Olympic Complex. Among them are key figures: Kada Yacine, general manager of the complex, Belmadani Belkacem, deputy director, Attouche Ali, head of equipment, and Hormoz Soufiane, chief of the technical workshop. These four men have been placed under arrest, while three other officials, Hadj Ali Mohamed, Ben Amirouche Hicham, and Tiyou Abdelkader, have been placed under judicial supervision.

The accusations are particularly grave: fatal negligence, reckless injury, lack of safety measures, and abuse of office. These failings are directly linked to the absence of appropriate safety devices, poor crowd management, and what has been deemed inadequate maintenance of the stadium infrastructure.

Towards a turning point in stadium management

Beyond the individuals indicted, an entire management culture is being called into question. The investigating judge's decision sends a strong message: impunity will no longer be tolerated, especially as Algeria prepares to host major international competitions. The investigative commission's report, submitted to the presidency at the end of July, has already highlighted systemic flaws in the safety of the country's sports venues.

This case, closely followed by the public, could mark a turning point. The courts aim not only to honor the victims of 5-Juillet, but also to set a precedent: one of clear criminal responsibility in the management of public assets. This decisive step could permanently redefine safety standards in Algerian stadiums.
