Alabama High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – Sept. 8

Another weekend of Alabama high school football is in the books and things are beginning to take shape in the Yellowhammer State.

Now three weeks into the 2025 season, Thompson remains at No. 1 in the state rankings, while Hewitt-Trussville moves to No. 2 following a massive win over Vestavia Hills. Hillcrest is into the top 10 after defeating Hoover.

Looking ahead, a whopping five ranked in-state matchups are coming up this Friday. Below are the top 25 teams in Alabama after week three, according to the Massey Ratings.

1. Thompson Warriors (2-1)

After suffering a tough loss on the road at nationally-ranked Grayson (Ga.) last week, Thompson returned to form via a 69-0 rout of Tuscaloosa County. The Warriors improved to 2-1 and still boast an elite roster that’s unrivaled in the state. They now head to Oak Mountain this weekend before No. 4 Vestavia Hills heads to Alabaster for a top-five tilt on Sept. 19.

2. Hewitt-Trussville Huskies (3-0)

Hewitt-Trussville’s rushing attack looked lethal in a 28-14 win over Vestavia Hills. The Huskies rushed for 398 yards and three scores, headlined by Kentucky RB commit Delvecchio Alston, who finished with 184 yards and two touchdowns. HT now heads to Hoover for another top-10 bout this Friday, where its favored to win by two scores, per the Massey Ratings.

3. Saraland Spartans (3-0)

After opening the season with a tight ranked victory, Saraland has now cruised two weeks in a row to stay undefeated at 3-0. The Spartans bullied Gulf Shores at home 43-14 on Friday after blanking Blount 46-0 the week prior. An intriguing trip to Spanish Fort, now the No. 26 team in the state, is coming up for Saraland this week. The Spartans currently aren’t scheduled to take on another ranked foe until late October.

4. Vestavia Hills Rebels (2-1)

Unable to stop the run, Vestavia Hills suffered its first loss of the season to No. 2 Hewitt-Trussville over the weekend. There’s no time to pout for the 2-1 Rebels, though. No. 9 Hillcrest comes to town this weekend with a trip to No. 1 Thompson set for the following weekend on Sept. 19. The Massey Ratings predict Vestavia Hills to get back on track with a 42-18 win this Friday.

5. Central Red Devils (3-0)

Per usual, Central looks to have one of the best offenses in the state once again. Following a 56-20 thrashing of Smiths Station, the Red Devils are now averaging 51 points per game. Junior quarterback Bobby Coleman threw for two more touchdowns while senior running back Donovan Crow rushed for three TDs. Central heads to No. 13 Dothan this week for a notable ranked clash.

6. Clay-Chalkville Cougars (3-0)

It was more of the same for Clay-Chalkville last weekend, too. The Cougars improved to 3-0 with a 52-9 win over Pell City and are now averaging 52.6 points per game. Senior four-star Ole Miss commit Corey Barber caught seven passes for 110 yards and a touchdown, while the Cougars’ rushing attacked compiled 279 yards and five scores. They now take on Birmingham Shades Valley this week.

7. Auburn Tigers (2-1)

In the 100th meeting of one of Alabama’s biggest high school rivalries, Auburn went on the road and outlasted Opelika 17-10. Offense was tough to come by, but Tigers junior QB Cason Myers still managed 245 yards and a score through the air and 87 yards on the ground. A third-straight in-state ranked game is on deck this week as Auburn hosts No. 16 Enterprise.

8. Parker Thundering Herd (3-0)

After passing its first test in week two, Parker didn’t have to sweat much in its 47-3 win over Gardendale last week. The Thundering Herd have a crucial interstate clash against Carrollton (Ga.) in two weeks, but first, they head to Morris to take on 1-2 Mortimer Jordan in a game they’re favored to win by five scores, per the Massey Ratings.

9. Hillcrest Patriots (3-0)

One of the biggest wins of the weekend, Hillcrest went to Hoover and picked up a crucial 34-26 win. The Patriots raced to an early lead via 22 first-quarter points and rushed for all four of their touchdowns on Friday night. Now 3-0 and into the top 10 in the state, they head to Vestavia Hills for their biggest opportunity yet.

10. Hoover Buccaneers (1-2)

Hoover’s brutal schedule to start the season has left it at 1-2 after the home loss to Hillcrest. The Buccaneers are still searching for their first home win of the season — and another massive game is coming up this Friday as No. 2 Hewitt-Trussville makes the trip. Senior Florida State WR commit Jonah Winston had 68 receiving yards on four catches in the loss last week.
