A prisoner in France pulled off a brief but bold escape over the weekend by slipping into a laundry bag belonging to his cellmate—who was being released after completing his sentence. According to Sébastien Cauwel, director of France’s prison administration, the man “took advantage” of his cellmate’s departure to flee Corbas prison, located just outside the southeastern city of Lyon, as initially reported by CNN.
But the jailbreak didn’t last long. Lyon’s prosecutor’s office confirmed that the fugitive was rearrested early Monday morning in Sathonay-Camp, a suburb of Lyon. He was reportedly exiting a cellar around 6 a.m. when police moved in. No injuries were reported, and his alleged accomplice remains at large.
The escapee is now facing charges tied to organized criminal activity, including escape as part of an organized gang and criminal conspiracy. Authorities discovered the escape Saturday morning and immediately launched an investigation. Cauwel described the incident as “extremely rare,” citing an “accumulation of errors” and acknowledging a troubling breakdown in procedures. He also pointed to the prison’s chronic overcrowding—operating at about 170% capacity—as a factor complicating security and staff operations.
The man had been serving multiple sentences and was under investigation for connections to organized crime, according to France’s prison service and local media reports.
The event echoes a dramatic escape from a French prison convoy last year, in which gunmen ambushed a transport vehicle to free inmate Mohamed Amra—nicknamed “The Fly.” Amra was recaptured in Romania earlier this year, according to Reuters.
